Best Chili in all the SW states!! BAR NONE!!
by Toby Atencio1 at Citysearch
The Owner of The Barela's Coffee House, Mike Gonzales, and his girlfriend Geri are personal friends of mine!! And it is no secret that they are the hardest working owners of a restaurant on this side of the Rio Grande River!! Mike is always in the back cooking the eggs for enchiladas, etc, and Geri is the pretty and very personable woman taking payment at the cash register...... The food is outstanding, and the Chili is the best in SW states, due to their "secret" way of processing it!! The Chicharones are the "bomb", Their other specialty are the enchiladas, and just a plain ol bowl of chili, (red or green), bowl of posole, or the never ever popular menudo!! Lot's of downtown politicians and politico's during lunch time!! Sooo good that President Obama had his staff stop him by on his last visit!! His picture is on the menu in the front!!
ABQ's BEST New Mexican
by Manse at Citysearch
Breakfast time is the best time to visit Barelas Coffee House! Their Huevos Deluxe can't be beat! Add a side of carne adovada and you are in heaven. The chili is the best - bar none. Wait staff is eager to please. We are regulars there every week. Don't miss this place on a visit to ABQ.
Always makes us feel @ home in Albuquerque
by GR88LYF at Citysearch
Ran into Barelas 4 years ago and I have been eating there for local southwest dishes whenever I am in ABQ. Being from NYC fancy facade and signage doesn't impress me none. The people that frequent this place are locals or work around the area. Great service and atmosphere.
Best Huevos anywhere
by Gruberman at Citysearch
Do yourself a favor and order the Huevos Rancheros Deluxe. Make sure to sub the home fries for the hash browns, you won't be disappointed. Their green chile has amazing flavor, and isn't all starch.
- Pros: Food is awesome.
- Cons: Crowded especially fri/sat mornings.
Best New Mexican Restaraunt in Albuquerque
by carlotita at Citysearch
Barelas is definitely the best "New Mexican" restaraunt in Albuquerque. It's like eating at Grandma's. From breakfast to dinner-it's all fantastic. Red or green...both excellent. No sopapillas, but the tortillas are fantastic. Chicharones wrapped in a tortilla - to die for! The drive down into the old Barelas neighborhood is worth it. You will have to circle the block a few times to find parking, stand in line for a few minutes and pray that you find a table. The good service/servers quarantee you will get back to the office on time. I highly recommend this restaraunt to visitors to Albuquerque who seek the authentic New Mexican cuisine, at reasonable prices.
- Pros: Great food,service, atmosphere
- Cons: Parking
Great New Mexican cuisine.

Good food, fast and efficient waitresses, but what a disappintment to find out they did not serve SOIPAPILLAS. I have to have SOIPAPILLAS with New Mexican cuisine. Sorry BARELAS.
- Pros: Great food! Fast, efficient and courteous waitresses!
- Cons: Where are the SOIPAPILLAS? I have to have SOIPAPILLAS with New Mexicine cuizine.

Chili breakfast on the patio -- WOW !!!!
by rumcow at Citysearch
This place is so crowded that you can't get OUT the door, let alone in. But it is DEFINITELY worth it. Get a table on the inside patio and have breakfast with their red or green chili -- you know the debate. Either here is fantastic.
- Pros: the patio, green & red chili, breakfasts
- Cons: enormous lines, very crowded, little parking

Best green chile in Albuquerque, perhaps in New Mexico. Great southwestern atmosphere. The smells of nearby tortilla factories add to the experience.
- Pros: Eclectic atmosphere, great food, best green chile
- Cons: lack of parking
