The Scene
A friendly, down-home eatery off the beaten path. Guests can dine at the counter in a cheery, soda-fountain-like room that's accented with purple chairs, window sills and gingham curtains. In the larger dining area, brightly painted tabletops are offset by black and white photography on adobe walls. A sunny back patio surrounded by flowers and chatty bar area are also comfy places to settle in for a meal.
The Food
The comfort food here is served up with a Southwestern twist. Start with smoked chicken nachos, a hefty pile of chips topped with smoke-infused bits of chicken, cheese, guacamole, black beans, chives, jalapenos, sour cream and fresh, chunky salsa. If you're still hungry, a juicy, oversize burger on a warm bun is served with a pile of skin-still-on fries. For a true taste of Santa Fe, try flavorful blue corn turkey enchiladas smothered with melted cheese, sour cream, guacamole and red, green, or "Christmas" chili.

My husband and I had an excellent lunch at Harry's, June 14th, 2008. We were thoroughly pleased with Harry's. This was my second visit and my husband's first. I had the vegetarian special, which included tomatoes (eeek!) but our great waitress carefully explained their origin and assured us they were not part of the scare. We enjoyed being seating outside on the back porch, where we had a good view of the delightful patio. Our chatty waitress was attentive and dependable. She must be a favorite, since we heard a couple ask for her as they were seated. The staff works quickly and efficiently. The food and service met our expectations. We tipped over 20% and were happy to do so. Harry's daily specials on soup, salad and entrees make the menu even more interesting and there are plenty of unique offerings. The beer list is not too long and is good, including some Mexican choices, which goes over great with my crowd! We will return to Harry's and recommend it without hesitation.

This isn't the place to go for a gourmet meal, unless you're talking desserts. It's the place to meet friends, have good, hearty food, and enjoy the wait staff. Regulars are cherished, and get more love from the staff when Harry's is their Cheers Bar, but I've almost always found the service to be pleasant, and often friendly, and almost always competent. I've eaten at Harry's off and on for 7 years. You can sit at the counter, like a diner, in the bar (which is a full bar: beer, wine, hard stuff) on stools or at the bar, or in one of the three dining rooms or even outdoors when the weather is nice. Some folks may have had a single bad experience at Harry's and written a scathing review here in revenge. Pfooey: every waiter, every restaurant, will fumble now and then. The line is long during tourist season, but the rest of the year, when there's a line, it's often a good time to meet and chat with strangers. And on Harry's worst day, it's worth coping with some temporary snarliness to get to his wife, Peyton's, pies and other desserts. Bottom line: if you're looking to put a notch on your Michelin dining belt, there are many better places in Santa Fe to get that done. But if you're looking for dependably good food from a diverse menu, atmosphere, and service and a place for enjoying the company of friends and strangers, Harry's is the Great American Neighborhood Party in a restaurant.
Pros: food, service, atmosphere
Cons: sometimes long lines
