Tasty, hearty, traditional New Mexican food..
Yes, the booths are worn, and the place is tiny for the crowds that seem drawn during rush, but if you're looking for traditional New Mexican this is a great place.
The salsa is amazing, sweet and spicy, but if you don't do meat it's not for you. The salsa is available in many local grocers and the label says it contains beef, so sorry vegetarians and vegans, but you will never know the tastiness that is Los Cuates salsa... unless of course you're willing to cheat.
As for the food overall, keep in mind traditional NM food is filling. I went with a foreigner friend (from California) and they said it was heavy, but it totally reminded me of the hearty, spicy goodness of Grandma's.
I think the person who wrote the review mentioning the rude staff and spendy drinks might have gone to the location on the other side of Lomas at Monroe. I never bother with that location, instead sticking to the real deal across the way. If you're confused it's in the same parking lot as Clark's Pet Emporium.
Great food, good value, slow service. Los Cuates is a great combination of dynamite mexican food, affordable prices, and funky atmosphere. The service could be better, and the booth seats are completely worn down to the springs and make for uncomfortable seating. Parking is a pain, but once you are inside, just get a red and green chili-smothered combination plate and enjoy!
Terrible Dining Experience. Ate at this resturant last night. It was terrible and thats being nice. The food was awful..the carne adovada looked like dogfood. The drinks were overpriced, $12.00 per drink. When we tried to question the barmaid about the price of drinks she was very rude and unhelpful. I cannot and willnot ever recommend this resturant to either locals or visitors to New Mexico
