Located on an acre of land in the North Valley is this nursery's unique rammed-earth headquarters. Hippies, yuppies and aggies commingle in the aisles, swapping organic-growing tips.
The Goods

Inside, check out the selection of seeds and the books on Southwest gardening. Outside, the focus is on native plants and those adapted from similar climates. They stock all the basics from other nurseries' native-plants sections, plus hard-to-find native shrubs and perennials. You'll find persimmons, quinces and figs, along with grasses, ground covers and cacti.
