The Verdict
Casa de Ruiz to locals, this cafe serves sandwiches and New Mexican specialties in an Old Town historic home.
The Scene
Located in one of the oldest residences in Albuquerque, this restaurant lies just behind San Felipe de Neri Chapel in Old Town. The original building dates from the early 18th century, but a second patio and waterfall are among the modifications made over the years. Get up early to enjoy one of this cafe's breakfasts, then spend the rest of the day wandering around Old Town and the surrounding museums.
The Food
Hispanic Magazine listed this place among the top fifty Mexican restaurants in the United States for its loyalty to generations-old culinary traditions. New Mexican specialties include carne adovada burritos, meat or vegetarian fajitas and daily specials. The cafe also serves delicious sandwiches, salads, soups, and hamburgers for lunch or dinner.
Dish to Die For
Try the red or green chile-smothered tamale plate, with two pork or vegetarian corn tamales and a choice of squash, beans, or spinach.

We discovered this place while on vacation. We opted to walk through the downtown area before deciding on a place for lunch. We all enjoyed what we ate. My daughter is a cheese enchilada officianado. She loved it. We also discovered a sweet fried bread treat that was so good.

I think this is a pretty good place! On a road trip with the family, we just happened onto this restaurant. Didn't look like much from the outside, but inside, all the charm came out. The service we had was excellent. Don't forget to have the fresh bread and try the soup. The kids really want to go back again on the next trip.

I stopped by through a recommendation of a local store owner. I was pleasantly greeted at the door by a young and friendly hostess. I was seated promptly in the most lovely back patio I have ever seen. I was placed right next to a lovely waterfall and even prettier flowers. The server was gracious and quick. I was also pleasantly surprised by the moderately priced food and how excellent it was. I had the combination plate and highly recommend it to anyone wanting to experience the local cuisine at its best. Every time I stop in Albuquerque this will be a must for me and all my friends.
