Great Japanese Restaurant!. Not sure what these other reviews are talking about but I went there recently and the place rocks! Food was great and the atmosphere was really cozy! Try the yakiniku and the spicy mussels - fan-fricken-tastic!

Bad sushi... Bad sushi place. Salmon skin roll was nasty. Agreed with everything in the last reviewed. All of the fish were cut incorrectly, and some what old to taste. Hands Down...........

A Completely Faux Sushi Place. Now I have lived in Japan so you could accuse me of being jaded. But I also lived in Portland for 10 years and every sushi place I went to there was much better in regards to quality, price and originality. To start, the complimentary miso soup was bland and almost salt-less. The necessary amount of salt is critical for miso. After that, scanning the sushi list for the first time, I noticed that practically all if not all of the speciality rolls had crab in them. As in imitation crab. As in filler. Which is the sign of a cheap and very inauthentic sushi place. A total red flag. Being new to NM, I decided to try the New Mexico roll with green chile. Totally bland. Playing it safe, I decided to get a salmon skin roll. When I got it, I was confused if it was really a a salmon skin roll and asked if that was it. They said it was. It wasn't like any salmon skin I've had and it also had carrots (!!!) in it (more filler). I have never, ever seen carrots in a sushi roll anywhere. I had to pick them out. My unagi and makerel were fine but nothing special. In conclusion, Japengo is a typical fake suburban sushi place that is more concerned about having a nice decor than actually anything resembling real sushi. After all, they have a "viagra" roll-yet there was nothing in the roll's ingredients that suggested increased virility. Couldn't figure out if it was some sort of joke or what. I only went here because the person I was meeting suggested we meet there.
