ABQ needs Whole Foods. I really love Whole Foods and make a long trip every week. I like the selection at this location better then the one on Carlisle. I am always treated with kindness and given help whenever I need it.
Treat the body like a temple at the country's first national certified organic market..
In Short
Whole Foods is a vegetarian's dream grocery store, with a focus on natural and organic goods and a gargantuan selection of fruits, vegetables and vegan products. But carnivores won't feel neglected, as stores also boast a vast selection of top-quality meats, poultry and fish. Also expect fresh-baked goods, housewares, a floral department and a well-stocked vitamin and personal-product section. Deli offers hot and cold prepared foods and artisanal cheeses.
Expensive and Haughty, but. . .. There is no denying that Whole Foods Market is expensive. And there is also no denying that the whole place seems to exude this snooty, high-brow, 'we're better than you-and we know it!' kind of attitude with all the organic produce and soy products. . .but there are simply some things available here that aren't anywhere else in Albuquerque. For example, cheese. Now, WFM doesn't have a great cheese market, and the sight of prewrapped slices of Taleggio is enough to make this fromage lover cry, but I simply can't find these cheeses anywhere else here, so I must shop for them there. Also, I love their bulk foods section. I'm a total trail-mix fiend, and WFM has the most astonishing array of trail/snack mixes I've ever seen, along with a dizzying selection of grains and those things that are in shells usually but can also be salted/seasoned (I'm not allowed to write out that apparently inflammatory word-ie cashews and almonds). The deli is high-end and accordingly priced, the breads very well-made. All in all, I like this place. However, as far as produce, I'd say get off yer organic high horse and do New Mexico some real good-shop locally, at a farmer's market. A conventional apple from NM is, in the end, a lot better for our state and the environment than an organic banana from Belize.
Nice but.... you must be able to afford it. The market that Whole Foods is will do very nicely.
